Overveiw * Students will look at famous people such as Jennifer Lopez, Brittney Spears, Mariah Carey, and models from American Eagle or Abercrombie and Fitch to compare the way the models look to how people in their school look. * This will make the students make choices on how they see themselvs and how society wants people to look or strive to look like. ***Websites at the bottom of the page that the students will use.*** Introduction Young adults today look at others to get clothing ideas, hair ideas, and body image ideas. In today's society we are taught that being bigger isn't always a good thing, whether it be from magazines, television, music videos, or from looking at sites on the internet.Look at various people from these web sites and give your opinion on them, if they are skinny or pretty. What makes you like or dislike this person? Task The task is to educate and role play your impression that body image has on people. Process A. Split into small groups of 4 and discuss with each other the way that these pictures make you feel, and why they make you feel this way. Then make a visual aid of how the group has ranked these people on prettiest or cutest and the reasoning why. Make sure to include anyone in your group that has changed your mind on how you think about the way a girl or boy is "suppose" to look. B. You will now split into another group of 4 to role play out a situation and try to solve the problem. The people include: Parent - As the parent you begin to see that your daughter, who is a dancer and cheerleader, has become very un-interested in dinner or being around when there is food around. You have asked her if there is a problem, and if she wants to talk about it, but she always refuses. One night while at a dinner party with friends, you hear your daughter in the restroom purging (throwing up her food), this is when you realize that she is suffering from an eating disorder. You have to decide on how you are going to confront your daughter, what you are going to do to help, and why you think she is like this. The Best Friend- As the best friend you will be the one to find out first what is going on with your friend. Since you dance and cheer with her, you feel that you should tell someone else. You heard her purging in the restroom before a recital and when she came out she said that she thinks she has the stomach flu, but you know that is not true because you have heard the same thing from her before. Your job is to decide what you are going to do to help, who you can tell without your friend becoming angry at you, and what is the right way to explain to your friend that this is wrong. High School Teacher- You have noticed in the past few months that Krista( the young girl with the problem) has began to become very tired and lethargic in class. You have also noticed her work slipping from getting all A's and B's.You know something is wrong, you just don't know what. Then you notice one day that Krista has become very pale and her face looks as if it is caving in. How do you approach Krista about this problem?,What do you do if she denies that anything is wrong?, Who do you go to for help?. Krista- Krista is the young girl with the disorder. You know that what you are doing is not good for you in any way, but lately you have been feeling heavier while dancing and thought that you just needed to loose a small amount of weight. So you fasted for 3 days, but after fasting you noticed that it is hard for you to begin eating again because you see yourself as "getting bigger" every time you eat. Your job is to decide if you go and tell anyone, how you come about telline everyone that you care about, if you are going to try to force yourself to eat, and how long you are going to wait to tell anyone if you do at all.
